Deployments lower frac fuel costs by utilizing field gas in place of diesel and CNG

LAKEWOOD, Colorado (BUSINESS WIRE) – Pioneer Energy, Inc., an oilfield technology company, today announced that it is supplying and deploying field gas conditioning equipment, including mechanical refrigeration units (MRUs) and auxiliary skids, for frac jobs utilizing field gas as part of Rolfson Oil’s Tri-Fueling™ approach.

“The industry continues to look for practical ways to reduce frac fuel costs, and increased utilization of field gas presents an immediate pathway to accomplish this,” said Joseph Palaia, Vice President of Business Development at Pioneer Energy. “Rolfson Oil, the largest provider of frac fueling services in the US, is pursuing an innovative approach to this opportunity with Tri-Fueling™, and we are excited to support those efforts with our field-proven gas conditioning equipment. We look forward to continuing to support and collaborate with Rolfson as they bring this next generation solution to market.”

Pioneer’s mechanical refrigeration units (MRUs) remove water and heavy hydrocarbons from field gas to provide consistent, reliable, high-quality fuel gas, while the Company’s auxiliary skids provide integrated gas heating, filtration, pressure regulation, and flow management functions. Depending on field gas composition and operating requirements, these systems can be deployed either individually or together to support fuel delivery for demanding frac fleet applications.  Rolfson’s BATBOX automated fueling systems then distribute the conditioned field gas to dual fuel and natural gas powered equipment onsite.

“We continue to see growing interest in Tri-Fueling™ as operators look to reduce fuel costs and improve fueling logistics in frac operations,” said Francis Noble, Vice President of Engineering at Rolfson Oil. “Pioneer’s equipment has played an important role in helping us execute these deployments and continue expanding our Tri-Fueling capabilities in the field.”

As operators increasingly prioritize fuel cost reduction, emissions performance, and operational efficiency, both companies believe field gas utilization via Rolfson’s proprietary Tri-Fueling delivery model represents an important evolution in frac fleet fueling.
