Crude Midstream
Crude Stabilization & Value Optimization

Meet Tightening Pipeline Specifications and Maximize Crude Value

Use precise separation and stabilization to improve blending outcomes.

Crude midstream facilities are increasingly handling streams with higher concentrations of light ends than their systems were originally designed to manage. As NGL-to-oil ratios rise in upstream production, traditional surface facilities are allowing more light components to remain in the crude stream delivered to gathering systems, terminals, and blending facilities.

At the same time, pipeline specifications are becoming more stringent, driven by refinery demand for heavier components in the crude and reduced tolerance for high vapor pressure (RVP). This combination is making it more difficult to consistently meet specifications, leading many sites to rely on blending, which often results in over-blending and reduces the realized value of crude.

Historically, light-end volumes were manageable, and blending was sufficient to meet specifications. At low levels, separating and stabilizing these components was not economically justified. Today, higher concentrations of NGL components in the crude have shifted the economics, making precise separation and control of crude composition a more effective way to maintain compliance and maximize value.

A Modular Approach to Crude Stabilization and Optimization

Pioneer Energy’s VPT + Pegasus MRU system provides a skid-based, modular solution to stabilize crude streams and optimize product composition without requiring a major facility expansion.

Integrated with existing crude handling infrastructure, the VPT + Pegasus MRU separates light ends from the crude stream, producing a stabilized, on-spec crude product while recovering those light components as Y-grade NGLs. This enables more precise control over crude quality and reduces reliance on blending to meet pipeline specifications. When blending is used, the system dynamically adjusts product composition to optimize the hydrocarbon mix and maximize overall crude value.

Produce On-Spec Crude with Greater Consistency

Stabilize crude streams to meet pipeline vapor pressure (RVP) and quality specifications, reducing variability and improving compliance even when there are significant fluctuations in incoming hydrocarbon mix.

Reduce Shrinkage and Preserve Crude Value

Optimize stabilization to remove only the necessary light ends, minimizing shrinkage while maintaining maximum value in the crude stream.

Maximize Total Product Value

Separate and recover light ends as valuable Y-grade NGL product while maintaining optimized crude composition, increasing overall revenue across all product streams with minimal shrinkage.

Additional Benefits

Improve Blending Outcomes and Reduce Value Loss

Enhance blending effectiveness by delivering more consistent, controlled crude inputs. Reduce over-blending and minimize value loss from diluting higher-value components.

  • Reduces crude vapor pressure (RVP) and improves handling characteristics

  • Enables more accurate and controlled blending operations

  • Minimal disruption to ongoing facility operations

  • Scalable and adaptable to changing crude compositions
